While working for a larger company may offer more job security, allow you to hit the ground running, have set procedures and policies, and may occasionally pay in the higher range, there is something about a startup that just works. A startup is not for everyone and you need the stomach for it. Things move fast - really fast and you gotta move with it. Don’t shy away from exploring a startup career, and here are six reasons why:
1. More responsibility
Often, working at a startup means that you’re part of a small team (usually within the single digits). As a result of such a small team, it’s likely that no one else within the company has an equivalent skill set to you, approaches issues the same, or even thinks similarly to you.
2. You’ll have more opportunities
Working at a startup offers a different type of reward: loads of responsibility because you were hired for your skills. However, the team expects more from you. You’ll have the opportunity to work outside of your job description which makes opportunities for learning and growth inherent along with the chance to drive and advance the company.
3. You’ll be able to do a lot of different things
Working at a startup gives you the opportunity to try on a lot (and I mean A LOT) of different hats. This is one of the reasons why I LOVE working at a startup. Looking back on my first year with VueReal, I’ve lost track of all the different tasks that I’ve been able to take part in, including installing servers, assisting with facilities, and helping with design (interior and graphics). How many people in my industry can say they have done all that?
4. Your work will be recognized
We’ve all been there: hours, days, even weeks spent on a project, and then you launch and do not receive a single recognition within your department or organization. At a startup, if you succeed, the team recognizes you instantly. At VueReal, we celebrate every success at our weekly company townhall, to give credit where credit is due! Generally, startups are the home of revolutionary technology and the core team is tagged with that innovative impact for life.
5. Awesome atmosphere
Let me count the ways:
- I wear jeans to work, and in the summer, I wear shorts and sandals.
- We have actual fun team building and social events for the team and our families too.
- We celebrate culturally significant holidays.
- We have a transparent work environment.
- The culture and amazing people.
- Free food (and sometimes drinks!)
6. Job satisfaction
Our team shares in the ideas, growth, and success of the company. This makes it an attractive career path because we all want to belong to something special. When the VueReal team succeeds, we can be proud of really knowing how we contributed to that success.
You will not be bored at VueReal.
